Victoria the 18th February 1863
Dear Father:
The bearer of these few lines delivers to you my horse and rope, and saddle, and ____?. Our regiment has been dismounted, and we for the time are infantrymen. I would gladly come up with the horse in order to once again spend a few days with all of you, but could not get a furlough, because out of each company only 22 men got permission to bring their horses home. Valentin should keep the horse on the farm, because in the event that Daniel should again come back to Texas, I will try to get a transfer in order to be with him in a company, for I have no longing desire to be an infantryman. I received the letter from Valentin a few days ago, and with greatest pleasure read that all of you are well, and prospects for a good winter season on the farm are evident. I must close with the wish that these few lines will reach you as happily as they leave me. I remain
Your loving son
Ch. Pfeuffer
N.B. Many greetings to my sisters and brother. Tell Valentin that he should be so kind and send me about $15.00 with Emil Mergele. We have since four months not received any pay. I am in haste for no doubt soon our horses will be taken home.
The above
