Rosedale, January 8th, 1863

We left Monroe the 2nd of January and received orders to divide our battery on two steamboats with our horses, wagons, and cannons. We were on board four days and landed 20 miles from here, we marched the following day to here. Col. ___?'s Battalion is here, one part four ____? of Sibley's Brigade Col. Sibley is expected to be here in a few days. It is reported that the entire brigade is to assemble here. We are about 20 miles away from Fort ___?, Mississippi, where we have 20,000 men. I believe that we are going to get pretty much to do here because the Yankees are trying everywhere to land. Yesterday, there was a landing in front of us and resulted in a little battle with the Yankees, and 12 were killed. We did not lose a man. Our captain has not returned. We expect him any day. I do not have my rifle as yet because I have not gotten together with the brigade. I believe that it will soon happen.

In hopes that you and all are well and healthy as I am, I remain your loving brother.
