New Braunfels Marksmen Club (Schuetzenverein)

The Schuetzenverein was organized on 4 Jul 1849, and was still in existance in 1968. A group of men would gather every Fourth of July and shoot their guns at targets. The member with the highest score was named "king" for the year. During the Civil War, members were only allowed one shot, due to the scarcity of gun powder. In the more recent times, a few women became members of the organization, and participated in sharp shooting competitions.
